The Bedrock Math Initiative

  • A 2025–2026 Algebra Advantage Program Led by Dr. Daryl Rock *

The Bedrock Math Initiative is a focused, research-backed program designed to expand access to rigorous math instruction for middle school students in Bedford-Stuyvesant and surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods. Named to honor both place and purpose, “Bedrock” reflects the strength, resilience, and brilliance of our students—and the unwavering commitment of the educators who believe in them.

Rooted in Brooklyn and grounded in results, this program will launch in the 2025–2026 school year and provide Algebra instruction to 8th grade students who have the talent and drive—but often not the access—to get on the path to advanced math and long-term academic success.

Why Algebra in 8th Grade Is a Gamechanger

To reach Calculus in 12th grade, students must begin Algebra in 8th grade. The math sequence is clear:

  • 8th: Algebra

  • 9th: Geometry

  • 10th: Trigonometry

  • 11th: Pre-Calculus

  • 12th: Calculus

And here’s why that matters: The strongest predictor of on-time college graduation is whether a student takes Calculus in high school—not whether they ace it, but whether they are given the chance. Without Algebra in 8th grade, that pathway is effectively closed.

Today, far too many of our students—particularly children of African descent—are placed on math tracks that prevent them from ever reaching advanced coursework. The Bedrock Math Initiative is designed to change that.

Led by Dr. Daryl Rock

The Bedrock Math Initiative is led by Dr. Daryl Rock, a widely respected educator and scholar whose work has improved student outcomes across New York City. As a result of his outstanding scholarship, Dr. Rock earned two master’s degrees and a doctorate in education from New York University, and has served as a classroom teacher, college instructor, principal, and superintendent.

“Our students can and will do amazing things when they are provided with the necessary human resources,” says Dr. Rock. “The primary factor that separates one school from another is not the students, but the character, will, and commitment of the adults who interact with them.”

A Track Record of Results

From 2008 to 2010, Dr. Rock served as Superintendent of the Harlem Children’s Zone Promise Academy Charter Schools, where students consistently outperformed citywide averages. Prior to that, as Principal of Benjamin Banneker Academy in Brooklyn, he raised the graduation rate to 98%, placing the school among the top 5% of public high schools in New York State.

He helped design and launch Bedford Academy, and mentored the founding principal of Young Scholars Academy—both high-performing schools serving Black and Latino students. He has also taught at Hunter College, NYU, and Medgar Evers College, and consulted with school systems in Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Newark.

Dr. Rock co-designed the original Math Regents Pilot Program with educator Viola Abbott, preparing 8th graders from under-resourced schools to complete high school Algebra through Saturday classes and intensive tutoring. Over 90% of participants passed the Regents exam. That model now serves as the foundation for the Bedrock Math Initiative.

The Bedrock Math Initiative is a new program of the Adelaide Sanford Institute (ASI), where Dr. Daryl Rock serves as Chairman. He leads this effort on a volunteer basis, and the program is entirely donor-funded. All instructional services, mentorship, and academic supports are offered free of charge to participating students and families.

About the 2025–2026 Program

Beginning in fall 2025, the Bedrock Math Initiative will enroll a cohort of 8th grade public school students in a yearlong program that includes:

  • After-school and Saturday instruction led by experienced math educators

  • Targeted tutoring and Regents prep

  • Mentorship and academic coaching that reflect the identities and potential of our students

  • A clear, supported path to high school Calculus and college-level STEM opportunities

This is not an experiment. It is a strategic, proven intervention, led by an educator who has delivered consistent results in schools where students were too often underestimated.
